Hysterosalpingogram, or HSG

A hysterosalpingogram, or HSG, is an important female fertility test

When women or couples come to us seeking fertility testing in New Braunfels, Texas, one of the first tests we will order is a hysterosalpingogram, or HSG. This special imaging study provides valuable information about what’s going on inside a women’s reproductive system, and can pinpoint certain causes of infertility that may be making it difficult to get pregnant or stay pregnant.

What is an HSG?

An HSG is a common fertility test that can tell us a great deal about a woman’s reproductive anatomy. This test can identify any blockages in the fallopian tubes that could prevent sperm from reaching an egg, or stop an embryo from reaching the uterus, where it could implant and grow.

A hysterosalpingogram also reveals whether any uterine abnormalities are present that could interfere with embryo implantation or development of a normal pregnancy.

  • Scar tissue in the fallopian tubes or uterus, often caused by prior infection, ectopic pregnancy or surgery
  • Uterine fibroids – non-cancerous growths inside the wall of the uterus
  • Intrauterine adhesions – bands of fibrous tissue inside the uterus
  • Septate uterus – a rare birth defect in which the uterus is divided into two parts
  • Endometrial polyps – a non-cancerous overgrowth of cells in the uterine lining

When we order a hysterosalpingogram, you will go to a local imaging center for the study, which is typically covered by insurance. You will need to have this test done after your period ends, so we will assist you with scheduling to ensure that your test occurs at the right time in your menstrual cycle.

At the imaging center, the study begins much like any gynecological exam, with a speculum inserted into your vagina. Next, the imaging technician will guide a catheter through the tiny opening in your cervix, and on into your uterus. A special dye that can be seen on X-ray will be injected into the uterus through this catheter.

While watching the movement of the dye on a screen, the technician can capture images of how and where the dye flows. If the dye doesn’t make it all the way through the fallopian tubes, a blockage is present. The dye will also show the shape of the uterus, as well as reveal any uterine abnormalities.

A radiologist will review the images captured in the study, and will share both the images and their findings with your reproductive endocrinologist. Using this information, combined with your blood work and any other results from your fertility testing in New Braunfels, we can create a fertility care plan designed to put you on the fastest track to pregnancy.

What does a hysterosalpingogram feel like?

The test does not require anesthesia, but can feel a bit uncomfortable, as it may cause cramping. We recommend taking an over-the-counter analgesic, such as ibuprofen, before your test. Cramping typically lasts less than hour after the procedure, and most women are able to go right back to work or other daily activities.

Who should get tested?

Couples who have been trying to conceive without success, or who have experienced multiple miscarriages, should consider reaching out to us to schedule fertility testing in New Braunfels. This is especially important if the female partner is 35 or older and the couple has been trying for six months or longer, but is also applicable to younger women who have been trying for at least one year.

Most fertile couples have about a 20% chance of getting pregnant naturally each month, so if it’s not happening when you want it to, it may be time to consider an HSG and other fertility tests to determine if there is an issue.
