Intrauterine Insemination, IUI

Intrauterine insemination, IUI is an infertility treatment usually used in combination with either oral or injectable medications.

Intrauterine Insemination, IUI is often used for mild to moderate male factor fertility issues or to improve chances of pregnancy with ovulation induction or super-ovulation. The goal of IUI is to get more good sperm where they need to be, when they need to be there. The process is relatively simple.

How IUI works

The male partner collects a sample in a sterile container either at our private collection room or at home. The sample is prepared in order to remove certain components of the semen that would not be beneficial for pregnancy. The sample is then reduced to a high concentration in a small volume. That sample is placed in a very small catheter (tube). The patient then has a speculum placed in the vagina and the catheter is placed through the cervix (the bottom part of the uterus) and into the the endometrium (lining of the uterus). The sperm sample is gently injected into the uterus and the catheter and speculum are removed. The patient rests for approximately 10 minutes and then may resume her normal activities.
