Fertility Testing for Gay Men

Fertility testing for gay men helps patients get on the path to parenthood

Texas Fertility Center New Braunfels proudly supports the LGBTQ community by providing a wealth of options for same-sex family building. For same-sex male couples and single men, Susan Hudson MD starts the process with fertility testing for gay men. This type of testing is the same as standard male fertility testing, which includes a semen analysis.

What happens at the first fertility appointment?

When you schedule a consultation with our New Braunfels fertility doctor, you’ll start with a discussion. Together, you’ll talk about your personal and family health history as well as your family-building goals. If you have a partner, Dr. Hudson will also want to know about his medical history. This information helps your doctor determine what types of male fertility testing to order.

From there, the next step is getting the recommended fertility testing for gay men. Typically, this will include a semen analysis for you and your partner, if you have one. A semen analysis can help Dr. Hudson identify any male fertility issues. That’s because this test examines the following parameters of sperm and semen health.

  • Sperm count
  • Semen volume
  • Sperm morphology (shape)
  • Sperm motility (movement)
  • Presence of infection
  • pH levels

Getting a semen analysis is a simple process. You will provide a semen sample through masturbation. This can occur in a private collection room at our andrology lab partner Ovation® Fertility. You also have the option to collect a sample from home and bring it to the lab within an hour of collection.

Once our andrology lab has your semen sample, an andrologist will look at your sample using a specialized microscope. They will record information about the semen and sperm. Our New Braunfels fertility doctor will then review the results with you.

What do the results of fertility testing for gay men mean?

If your semen analysis results are within normal parameters, you can move onto the next steps of the family-building process. For gay men, this involves in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg donation and gestational surrogacy.

In the event that the semen analysis results are abnormal, Dr. Hudson will likely order another semen analysis to confirm the results. If the second test comes back abnormal, she may prescribe certain fertility medications or make a referral to a urologist. This is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating issues in the male reproductive tract.

Regardless of your semen analysis results, our team is committed to helping you start or grow your family. Contact us if you would like to learn more about fertility testing for gay men or if you’d like to schedule an appointment with our New Braunfels fertility doctor.
