Understanding surgical procedures for endometriosis
Surgical procedures for endometriosis vary. Susan Hudson MD, our New Braunfels fertility specialist, makes recommendations based on a patient’s symptoms and stage of life. Women with endometriosis may experience different symptoms caused by endometrial tissue (implants), which grow outside the endometrium (uterine lining). Some patients may respond to medications and lifestyle changes, but others may require surgery to relieve their symptoms.
Surgical procedures for endometriosis can help preserve fertility
Women who hope to become pregnant in the future may benefit from surgical procedures for endometriosis that preserve their fertility. Our New Braunfels fertility specialist is sensitive to a woman’s desire to conceive. Dr. Hudson always attempts to help relieve the symptoms of endometriosis while keeping the patient’s uterus and ovaries intact. She is an experienced surgeon who performs minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery to help patients who have endometriosis.
During minimally invasive surgical procedures, Dr. Hudson removes or destroys endometrial implants and adhesions. After surgery, she may suggest additional fertility treatments.
A hysterectomy may be the best option for some patients
A hysterectomy is another option for patients who are unable to find relief with more-conservative procedures for endometriosis. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, removing the ovaries decreases the likelihood that endometriosis will return. Removing the endometrial implants during a hysterectomy when a woman keeps her ovaries also makes it less likely that the implants will return.
Preserving a woman’s ovaries during surgical procedures for endometriosis means that women will not experience early menopause. When a woman goes through menopause early, it increases her risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and certain metabolic disorders.
The surgeon’s skill affects the success of surgery
A surgeon’s skill is a key factor in the outcome of laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis. In fact, the more skilled the surgeon, the better the surgical outcome. Women can rest assured that our New Braunfels fertility specialist is highly skilled and trained in the most advanced surgical procedures for endometriosis.
