Help for recurrent miscarriage at our New Braunfels fertility center
Recurrent miscarriage can be difficult emotionally and physically. Seventy percent of women who miscarry once or twice continue on to have full-term pregnancies. However, women who have two or more miscarriages may require diagnostic testing and treatment.
The symptoms of miscarriage, most of which occur before the 12th week of pregnancy, include:
- Vaginal spotting or bleeding
- Abdominal or lower back pain or cramping
- Fluid or tissue passing from the vagina
Miscarriages usually happen because the fetus is not developing properly. Such abnormalities can include autoimmune problems, genetic problems, anatomic problems and hormonal problems. Routine activities such as exercise, intercourse or working do not cause miscarriages.
Is maternal health a factor in recurrent miscarriage?
The mother’s health may be a factor in miscarriages when the mother has one or more of the following:
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Infections
- Hormonal problems
- Uterine or cervical issues
- Thyroid disease
- Obesity
Treatment for recurrent miscarriage
Tests can be done to help determine the cause of recurrent miscarriages, including chromosome analysis for both partners, ultrasound examination of the uterine cavity, immunologic testing and hormonal testing. Once the cause of recurrent miscarriages is diagnosed, steps can be made toward treatment. Emotional healing is just as important as the physical healing for the mother and father.
