Causes of Male Infertility

Finding treatments to overcome the causes of male infertility

At our New Braunfels fertility center, patients are sometimes surprised to learn that male fertility issues cause or contribute to at least 40% of infertility cases. The good news is Susan Hudson MD offers highly effective treatments for many causes of male infertility. These options may include lifestyle changes, surgery and fertility treatments.

Exploring the causes of male infertility

At our New Braunfels fertility center, Dr. Hudson asks all new patients to provide a medical history. This allows her to identify potential areas of concern that require further investigation or genetic testing. As part of the new patient appointment, Dr. Hudson will also ask male patients to provide a semen sample for analysis. All these steps can help determine whether a couple has any of the common causes of male infertility.

  • Genetics. Some genetic disorders affect the quantity and quality of sperm. Others pose so much risk to the health of a future child that Dr. Hudson may recommend IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to avoid passing a significant disease on to the next generation.
  • Sperm quantity and quality. Some men do not produce enough sperm with the proper movement and shape. Our team may recommend intrauterine insemination (IUI) or even IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) when we believe fertilization is not otherwise likely.
  • Physical conditions. Some men are unable to ejaculate or have blocked sperm ducts. In these cases, Dr. Hudson may recommend the man visit a urologist to treat these particular causes of male infertility.
  • Lifestyle factors. Obesity, systemic disease and environmental exposures can affect a man’s sperm quality. Our team may recommend diet and exercise, limiting time in hot tubs, and quitting smoking to promote reproductive health.

Patients who learn that their genes or other factors are causing their infertility can find the revelation painful. However, appropriate diagnosis allows Dr. Hudson to create the customized treatment plan that is most likely to result in a successful pregnancy.
