Taking a deeper look at pelvic adhesions

Pelvic adhesions are bands of scar tissue that can cause pelvic organs, such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes, to be stuck together. Pelvic adhesion treatment may be necessary when adhesions make it difficult to achieve a healthy pregnancy. Pelvic adhesions can change a woman’s anatomy and prevent the egg and sperm from meeting. If the egg and sperm do not meet, fertilization and pregnancy cannot occur.

Some of the most common causes of pelvic adhesions are prior infections like gonorrhea, chlamydia or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Endometriosis and prior pelvic or abdominal surgery can also be responsible for these adhesions. Sometimes there may not be a clear cause for pelvic adhesions to occur.

Exploring pelvic adhesion treatment with Dr. Hudson

Dr. Hudson provides state-of-the-art pelvic adhesion treatment. The goal is to restore the fallopian tubes and ovaries to a more natural state. This will give the egg and sperm a better chance to meet, which increases the likelihood of conception.

Surgery is the only proven method for correcting pelvic adhesions. Dr. Hudson usually performs pelvic adhesion surgery using a laparoscope. Laparoscopy is an outpatient procedure that involves making two to four small incisions in the abdomen. Once inside, Dr Hudson is then able to view the abdomen using a camera. She will then use long, thin tools to treat the adhesions.

What happens after treatment?

Surgical pelvic adhesion treatment can be very successful. However, it is not a perfect solution. Adhesions can sometimes reform after surgery. Additionally, restoration of normal pelvic anatomy is not always possible. Some adhesions can cause such significant problems that surgical correction is not possible by even the most skilled surgeon.

However, there is still hope when surgery is unsuccessful or not possible. In such cases, Dr Hudson may recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF). This treatment can help you conceive, even in the face of severe pelvic adhesions.
