Fertility Supplements at Texas Fertility Center New Braunfels

CoQ10 and DHEA supplements may improve fertility in women with diminished ovarian reserve. While CoQ10 appears to be beneficial to both men and women, DHEA is prescribed to improve fertility in females.

CoQ10 for men & women

CoQ10 is found in most cells throughout the body, where it helps with basic cell function and growth. The body produces this coenzyme, although levels appear to decrease with age.
Certain foods, including meats and fish, also contain CoQ10 and it is available as an oral dietary supplement. Also known as ubiquinol, it has been used to treat a number of medical conditions, including infertility.

  • Men – CoQ10 has been found to be an effective treatment for some men. One study published in August 2012 issue of The Journal of Urology found the supplement was very beneficial for men with low sperm count, poor sperm motility and abnormal sperm shape. Following a 26-week treatment period where the men took a daily dose of 200 mg ubiquinol, improvements in sperm density, sperm motility and sperm morphology were noted.
  • Women – CoQ10 is also being used in the treatment of female infertility, although there is less evidence about its effectiveness. The supplement appears to improve egg quality, and many fertility specialists feel the treatment is beneficial enough to recommend it to their patients even though studies confirming its effectiveness are limited.

About DHEA

Available over-the-counter, DHEA is a natural steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, helps balance other hormones. It may be beneficial to women with low ovarian reserve due to age or premature ovarian aging.

Patients with infertility are advised to discuss the use of over-the-counter supplements with a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist, since some supplements interfere with other medications and may also require precise dosing.

Reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Hudson sees and treats infertile couples from San Antonio, New Braunfels and throughout South Central Texas. Contact Texas Fertility Center of New Braunfels today to discuss your options.
